Why brazed tools

Carbide cutting edge, steel body –
the best of both materials

In a brazed tool, a wear-resistant carbide cutting edge is firmly bonded to a tough, vibration-damping steel body. This produces tools that would be too expensive or too brittle in solid carbide – including large diameters and complex geometries. WSH-Tools manufactures from a drawing, a sample or an old tool.

Countersink: carbide tips brazed onto a tough steel body (computer rendering)

Long tool life, tough tool body

Carbide cutting edges for long tool life on a hardened and tempered steel body – robust under load and in interrupted cuts.

From drawing, sample or old tool

Only have an old tool or a sketch? We measure it, reverse-engineer the design and make a matching tool. Tolerances in the region of 3 µm are possible.

Re-tip instead of buying new

Worn cutting edges can often be replaced. We check what is worthwhile: regrinding, re-tipping or a new tool.

WSH-Tools - Manufacturing in Germany

The basics

What are made-to-measure brazed carbide tools?

Brazed carbide tools – also known as carbide-tipped or TCT (tungsten carbide tipped) tools, and as PCD-tipped tools when the cutting edges are made of diamond – are cutting tools in which carbide or PCD cutting edges are firmly brazed onto a steel base body using a brazing alloy. The cutting edge is wear-resistant, while the tool body remains tough and resistant to breakage.

A bespoke brazed tool made to drawing or sample pays off whenever no standard tool fits: for special profiles and steps, for large diameters where solid carbide would be too expensive or too prone to breakage, or as a replacement for special tools that the original manufacturer no longer supplies. Typical examples include special reamers, form cutters and end mills, step tools, countersinks and counterbores.

The advantages: cutting geometry freely defined by your drawing, tolerances in the region of 3 µm, long tool life – and once the cutting edge is worn, the tool is reground or re-tipped instead of being replaced. For standard jobs, we stock countersinks, step drills and end mills.

Manufacturing

How your brazed tool is made

  1. Design. We review the drawing, sample or old tool and define the geometry, cutting material and tolerances.
  2. Base body. The steel tool body is milled or EDM-machined and – where necessary – heat-treated.
  3. Brazing. The carbide or PCD cutting edges are permanently brazed onto the base body using a brazing alloy.
  4. Grinding. CNC precision grinding of cutting edges, clearance faces and diameters.
  5. Coating (optional). PVD hard coating such as TiN, TiCN or TiAlN for wear protection.
  6. Inspection and delivery. Dimensional inspection, careful packaging, dispatch.

Case study

Countersinks to customer drawings

60° and 90° countersinks with brazed carbide tips (computer rendering)

Computer rendering of two versions.

We have made a variety of countersinks with brazed carbide tips to customer drawings – for example with angles of 60° and 90°.

Construction: three carbide cutting edges brazed onto a steel body. Head diameter, for example, 39–40 mm, shank Ø 32 mm.

Why brazed: The carbide tips withstand wear, while the steel body remains tough. When the cutting edges become blunt, they can be reground or re-tipped. Brazed tools are considerably cheaper than solid carbide tools.

Your countersink: We make countersinks with any angle and diameter to your drawing or sample – even as a one-off.

Common questions

Brazed carbide tools – questions & answers

What are brazed carbide tools?

Brazed carbide tools, or brazed carbide tooling, have cutting edges made of carbide or PCD – known as brazed tips – that are permanently brazed onto a steel body using a brazing alloy. The tool body remains tough, while the cutting edge is wear-resistant. They are also known as carbide-tipped or TCT (tungsten carbide tipped) tools.

How do they differ from solid carbide tools and indexable inserts?

Solid carbide tools are made entirely of carbide and become expensive and prone to breakage at larger diameters. Indexable inserts are mechanically clamped and replaced. Brazed tools combine the best of both: a firm, rigid joint, a compact design for special profiles and small diameters, plus regrinding and re-tipping.

Can I order a tool based on a drawing, sample or old tool?

Yes. Send us a drawing, a sample, a sketch or your current tool. Useful details are the material, machine, diameter and length, tolerances and quantity. We will discuss everything else with you directly.

What tolerances are possible?

Depending on the tool and geometry, we manufacture to tolerances in the region of 3 µm (0.003 mm). Enter the required dimensions and tolerances on your drawing; we will check whether they are achievable for your tool before we quote. Every tool is inspected before delivery.

Do I get an inspection report for my tool?

Yes. Every tool is inspected before delivery. An inspection report (measurement report) with the measured dimensions must be ordered separately when you place your order.

What is your minimum order quantity?

We also make one-offs and small batches. Whether it is a prototype or a production run – just state your quantity in your enquiry.

Can a worn brazed tool be re-tipped or reground?

In many cases, yes. After an expert inspection, we will tell you whether regrinding, re-tipping or a new tool is more economical.

Which cutting materials and coatings are available?

We make cutting edges from carbide and PCD (polycrystalline diamond). PVD hard coatings such as TiN, TiCN or TiAlN are available on request – WSH-Tools offers all common PVD coatings for its tools. The right combination depends on your material and your machining process.

Can you reproduce a special tool from a brand-name manufacturer?

Yes, provided we have a drawing, a sample or the original tool. This gives you a second source of supply for your special tools – manufactured in Germany.

How quickly will I receive a quote, and how long does manufacturing take?

Send us your documents via the contact form, by email or via WhatsApp. The lead time depends on drawing approval: as soon as the drawing, cutting material, coating and quantity have been clarified and the drawing has been approved, we will give you the delivery date in our quote.

Do you also supply customers outside Germany?

Enquiries from Germany and other European countries – including the UK and Ireland – are welcome. You can reach us in German and English – and via WhatsApp chat at +49 171 4189690 in your own language, too.

What information do you need for a quote?

Ideally a drawing, a sample or the old tool, plus the material to be machined, the machine and tool holder, the quantity and your required date. A photo showing the main dimensions is also a good start – you can upload documents via the contact form.

Are brazed special tools cheaper than OEM tools?

Often, yes: we manufacture without the original manufacturers’ mark-ups, and when a tool is re-tipped, the base body is retained. We will give you the price in our quote.

Do you work with resellers?

Yes. Dealers, machine builders and service companies receive individual terms – for regular orders as well as one-off enquiries.

Do you also make industrial knives and machine knives?

Yes. Alongside brazed carbide tools, we make made-to-measure industrial and machine knives – for example shear blades, chipper knives, granulator knives and paper knives, from one piece upwards.

Are standard tools also available from stock?

Yes. Our shop stocks countersinks in HSS-G and HSSE-Co5, cross-hole deburring tools, step drills, end mills and carbide burrs – available for immediate delivery.

What does TCT mean – is a TCT tool the same as a brazed carbide tool?

TCT stands for tungsten carbide tipped. A TCT tool has carbide cutting edges (tips) brazed onto a steel body – in other words, it is a brazed carbide tool. We make such tools with carbide or PCD cutting edges to your drawing or sample, from one piece upwards.

When should I choose PCD instead of carbide cutting edges?

PCD (polycrystalline diamond) is extremely wear-resistant and is mainly used for abrasive non-ferrous materials such as aluminium, composites, GRP, plastics and wood-based materials. For steel and other ferrous materials, carbide is normally the right choice, as diamond is not suited to machining iron-based materials. We make cutting edges in carbide and PCD and match the cutting material to your material and your machining process.

What is the difference between regrinding and re-tipping a tool?

Regrinding sharpens the existing cutting edges and removes wear. Re-tipping goes a step further: worn or damaged carbide or PCD tips are replaced with new ones, which are brazed onto the existing steel body and then ground. Both are ways of reconditioning a tool instead of buying a new one. After an expert inspection, we tell you which option is more economical – or whether a new tool makes more sense.
